PVHS Students Triumph Over Staff in Fundraiser Basketball Game

On Tuesday, April 15, the Pahrump Valley High School gym was buzzing with excitement as students took on staff in a friendly — and slightly competitive — basketball game to raise funds for the PVHS Yearbook class.

The student team came out on top, defeating the staff with a final score of 66-54. Though the scoreboard reflected a fairly close game, there were whispers from the sidelines that the staff’s final score may have received a little “generous rounding” to keep things entertaining.

Regardless of the outcome, the real victory was for the PVHS Yearbook team, which organized the event and raised approximately $230 to help purchase supplies and materials needed for the class.

The game was played in four competitive — and often hilarious — 8-minute quarters. The student team was led by coaches Jace Wulfenstein and Logan Tilley, who helped guide their squad with strategy and encouragement. The student team was stacked with talent, featuring Keir Sheppard, Eric Figueroa, Cartier Jenkins, Jack Toth, Lucas Gavenda, Aydon Veloz, Antwahn Jackson, Tramaine Burras, Joshua Slusher, and Jamiah Mendenhall. Their teamwork, speed, and energy kept the staff on their toes.

The staff team, showing off some surprising moves of their own, included familiar faces from around the district, and was comprised of teachers, coaches, campus monitors, counselors and even the Board of Trustees President: Ben Veloz, Devin Petersen, Erik Odegard, Brian Muradi, Braydon Preston, Toby Henry, Mike Abbiss, Trenton Curtis, Bryan Wulfenstein, and Cameron Canon. While they may have come up short on the scoreboard, their spirit and effort made for an unforgettable night of fun and laughter.

The event was filled with lighthearted fun, giving students and staff a chance to face off in friendly competition and share plenty of laughs — a reminder not to take themselves too seriously. The energy in the gym was electric, with students, families, and community members filling the stands to cheer on both teams. Adding to the lively atmosphere, Assistant Principal Mr. Mapp and Dean Mr. Cook took on referee duties, keeping the game (mostly) under control, while Garage the Band brought the house down with a spirited halftime performance. It was all made possible by the PVHS Yearbook team, whose creativity and dedication helped turn the fundraiser into a fun and successful night.
