After opening the District 4 Junior Baseball Tournament with two impressive wins, the Pahrump Valley Little League Juniors faced two tough matchups to close out their run, ultimately finishing in third place. While the tournament didn’t end the way they hoped, the team showed heart, hustle, and determination every step of the way.

On Monday, June 16, Pahrump Valley took the field against Summerlin South, who would go on to win the tournament. Summerlin South got off to a strong start, holding Pahrump scoreless in the top of the first before taking advantage of several walks and base hits to jump ahead early. Despite the pressure, pitcher Everrett Abelar stayed composed on the mound, ending the inning with a key strikeout.

In the top of the second, Abelar led with a base hit, and Sawyer Tillery advanced the runner, followed by a walk to Trustin Butterfield. The team began to create scoring opportunities, using aggressive baserunning to their advantage. In one key moment, a pickle play involving Zyzek Taulbee allowed a runner to score, and another crossed home plate on an overthrow, showcasing the team’s awareness and hustle on the base paths.

By the fourth inning, Pahrump Valley began to close the gap. Stetson Brown stole home on a passed ball, and another run scored on an overthrow trying to catch a runner stealing third. A hit to second base allowed yet another run to come across, bringing the score to 5-8.

Summerlin South responded quickly in the bottom of the inning, putting up several more runs and taking a commanding lead. Though the Juniors fought hard, making solid plays in the field and pushing through with key walks and hits from players like Diego Chavarin and Juan “Jr.” Ruiz, they were unable to keep pace with Summerlin’s offensive momentum. The game ended in a 15-6 loss.

The following night, Pahrump Valley faced Peccole Little League in a rematch after narrowly defeating them 4-3 earlier in the tournament. This time, Peccole came in focused and determined, and the two teams battled in a hard-fought game that saw strong performances on both sides.

Pahrump got off to a promising start in the top of the first. Juan Ruiz reached on a single and later scored on a double to center field from Stetson Brown. Brown was caught stealing third, but the offense continued with singles from Abelar and Taulbee. However, Peccole’s defense managed to hold the damage to just one run.

Peccole answered with a pair of singles and a double to bring in two runs. Pahrump pitcher Zyzek Taulbee regrouped with two strikeouts, but another double pushed the lead to 3-1 by the end of the first.

In the third inning, Pahrump Valley kept pushing. After Zayne Tuck and Brown notched singles, Ruiz—running as a courtesy for catcher Tuck—scored to narrow the gap to 3-2. But Peccole widened the lead again in the bottom of the inning, capitalizing on a few defensive missteps and timely hits to stretch their lead to 6-2.

The Juniors continued to battle. In the sixth, a single from Abelar and another from Taulbee put runners on the corners. A defensive miscue allowed Abelar to score on a steal home, cutting the lead to 9-3. The defense held strong in the bottom of the sixth, and though Pahrump Valley fought to rally in the final inning, they were unable to mount a comeback.

With the 9-3 loss, Pahrump Valley was eliminated from the tournament, but they walked away with pride, knowing they secured third place in a competitive field.

The Pahrump Valley Juniors All-Stars showed skill, teamwork, and spirit throughout the tournament, and their performance made their community proud.
