As the Pahrump Valley High School Trojans gear up for another exciting football season, Head Coach Thomas Walker, now in his third season leading the team, shares his insights, expectations, and the spirit driving this year’s squad. Coach Walker, who has been a pivotal figure at the high school for twelve years, aims to build on past successes and foster a winning culture.

Coach Walker’s overarching goal for the upcoming season is clear: “Our overall expectations are to have a successful season, meaning seven or more wins and making the playoffs.”

With ambitious goals set, Walker emphasizes the importance of team effort and individual contributions. Standout players like Senior Matt Lopez, an exceptional offensive lineman and defensive tackle, and Hunter Mellinger, another Senior who excels in the same positions, are expected to lead by example. Kayne Horibe, stepping into his first full year as quarterback, and Ethan Hutchinson, returning from a knee injury, are also pivotal to the team’s strategy. Additionally, new talents like Rhett Swaner a safety who recently transferred in from Alabama and Austin Alvarez who moved back to Pahrump from Texas are adding depth and energy to the roster.

Coach Walker highlights the team’s key strengths: “This year, our offensive line is pretty solid up front. We’re thin, but our starting five are really good, and I think our passing game is going to be a lot better this year.” Preparation for the season began early, with the team practicing since June and participating in two camps, one at home and a challenging week at Southern Utah University. “We played really well and showed out against bigger schools, so it’s exciting,” Walker shares.

The Trojans are set to introduce a dynamic new offensive strategy this season. Embracing a multiple offense approach, the team plans to be versatile, shifting between spread formations, double wing sets, and other configurations based on the day’s challenges. This flexibility aims to keep opponents on their toes and capitalize on the team’s strengths. A significant boost to this new strategy is the addition of Offensive Coordinator Toby Henry. Coach Walker is enthusiastic about Coach Henry’s addition: “His knowledge of the game is amazing, and his offense and the way he coaches it, teaching the boys—he’s a phenomenal guy.” Coach Henry’s background as a former D1 player and pro in Europe adds significant expertise to the coaching staff.

The players have responded positively to Coach Henry’s influence. “The boys are excited to have him and love his offense. They’re pumped,” Walker notes. This enthusiasm is crucial as the team navigates the long, hot summer and focuses on keeping energy levels high and spirits motivated.

As well as Coach Henry who is joining the team from Liberty High School in Las Vegas, Coach Walker is supported by a dedicated coaching staff committed to bringing out the best in the Pahrump Valley High School football team. Coach Mike Colucci serves as the defensive coordinator, bringing innovative changes to the playbook. The head JV coach, Joey Colucci, plays a pivotal role in nurturing young talent. Additionally, Coach Wes Richardson, a former D1 linebacker in the ACC, joined last year and serves as the linebackers coach while also assisting with the JV team. This diverse and experienced coaching staff is poised to lead the Trojans to new heights this season.

Coach Walker acknowledges the importance of team chemistry and leadership from senior players. “We’ve done a lot to become more of a family, wanting to win and be successful,” he explains. Activities away from the field, like camps and casual hangouts, have been instrumental in building camaraderie.

Coach Walker’s coaching philosophy centers on developing young men of character. “We’re helping these guys become young men, reinforcing what they’re learning at home and in the classroom. Sports is one of the greatest things to reinforce teamwork and other values,” he explains.

Community support plays a vital role in the team’s success. Coach Walker highlights the upcoming spaghetti dinner fundraiser, a significant event for the team. “The community always comes out, and in the last couple of years, we’ve raised a little more than $20,000,” he shares with gratitude.

As the Trojans prepare for their upcoming games, traditional rivalries, particularly with Boulder, remain a highlight. “Boulder’s our big rivalry, and even though we’re moving up to 4A probably next year, we’ll still play them every year,” Walker confirms.

Walker has a clear message for the fans: “We always have a great turnout. Love our fans. They can just come out, support us. It means the world to these boys to play in front of the town. It’s going to be loud, and we just love and appreciate them so much.”

With a strong foundation, dedicated coaching, and a supportive community, the Pahrump Valley High School Trojans are poised for an exciting and successful season under Coach Thomas Walker’s leadership.
