Steven Sheppard, a 2003 graduate of Pahrump Valley High School (PVHS), has always been deeply influenced by his passion for sports and the friendships he formed during his high school years. Reflecting on his time at PVHS, Steven fondly recalls how sports were a cornerstone of his high school experience, fostering friendships that have lasted a lifetime. “All things related to sports are my fondest memories from high school,” he shared. “The competitiveness, the trips, and the training—all of it was what I lived for.”
During his high school career, Steven was heavily involved in athletics, participating in football, basketball, and track. During his senior year, Steven won a state championship in triple jump and was 2nd team all-state in football. His love for sports was evident early on, and he threw himself wholeheartedly into every practice and game. However, this focus on athletics came at the expense of his academics, something Steven later acknowledged as a missed opportunity. “I didn’t apply myself much academically,” he admitted. “My senior year, I had to scramble to make sure I ended with a cumulative 3.0, which was required for the Millennium Scholarship. It was a panic, but I managed to pull through.”
Despite the challenges, Steven’s involvement in sports wasn’t just about the games; it was also about the camaraderie and the relationships he built with his teammates. “The relationships I built with other athletes are still with me today,” he said. These connections, forged through shared experiences and a mutual drive to succeed, remain a significant part of Steven’s life.
One of the most significant moments during his high school years was meeting his future wife, Darla, in his junior year. “Before Darla, it was all about sports and hanging out with friends,” Steven recalled. “But once we started dating, everything shifted. My senior year became all about building our relationship, and it was the beginning of something that has turned into the rest of my life.”
After high school, Steven’s journey took a dramatic turn as he enlisted in the Air Force, a decision that would shape his career and personal development profoundly. Steven began his military service with a clear focus on developing both his technical skills and leadership abilities. His time in the military was marked by a series of significant assignments that honed his expertise and leadership style.
While serving in the Air Force, Steven also prioritized furthering his education. He earned a degree in Business Administration from Touro University. “Initially, I signed up for six years in the military, figuring that would be enough time to finish my degree,” Steven explained. “I ended up completing it in about four years. I chose business administration because I wanted to knock out some management skills while also gaining IT experience. Looking back, I probably should have chosen an IT-related field, but it all worked out.”
Steven’s military experience gave him a unique perspective on education and career preparation. He noted that in fields like IT, formal degrees are always required. “IT is one of those fields where being self-taught and having certifications can be more valuable than a degree,” he said. “Learning on the job and getting certified is highly regarded.”
Throughout his career, both in the military and beyond, Steven has remained deeply connected to his high school friends and the Pahrump community. “We all understand that we’re adults and busy, but we carve out time when we can to get together,” Steven shared. Whether it’s through attending their kids’ birthday parties or playing a round of golf, Steven values the enduring friendships that began in high school.
Steven’s personal life is as dynamic as his professional one. He and Darla married in 2005, shortly after Steven graduated from boot camp. The couple now has three children, all of whom are actively involved in various sports. “Our life is hectic,” Steven admitted. “We’re juggling a lot—sports, schoolwork, and everything else. But it’s all worth it. We take moments to slow down and appreciate what we have, even if life is busy and chaotic.”
Outside of work, Steven’s passions include music and fitness. He developed an interest in DJing in 2009, which expanded his love for music. “I was always the guy burning CDs for parties, trying to get the latest music,” Steven said. “DJing became a way to be a part of that world, and I did it a lot in San Antonio. These days, I’ve shifted more towards collecting vinyl and producing remixes, especially since moving back to Pahrump.”
