The Pahrump Valley High School girls’ volleyball team faced challenging competition last week, taking on Lake Mead Christian Academy on Friday, August 23rd, and another tough opponent on Monday night. Despite some setbacks, the team showed resilience and determination under the guidance of Head Coach Veronica Montanez.

On Friday, the Trojans went head-to-head with Lake Mead Christian Academy, the reigning state champions. While Lake Mead won all three games with scores of 25-21, 25-9, and 25-18, Coach Montanez was pleased with her team’s performance. “We played really well. They are state champs, I believe reigning, but we held our own,” she said. “It was a very tight game with a lot of serves that we passed really well and down balls.” The match featured some strong individual performances from the Trojans: Marayah Waller led the team with 8 kills, Bryn Mazlo made 6 digs, and both Charity Broderick and Belen Ramirez contributed with 8 assists each. Ramirez also led with 9 serve receives, showcasing her defensive skills.

Monday night brought another tough contest. The Trojans started strong, taking the first two games with scores of 25-23 and 25-23. However, as the match progressed, the team struggled to maintain their momentum, particularly with serve reception, which led to losses in the final three games, 23-25, 10-25, and 5-15. Despite the rough outcome, there were notable efforts from the players. Heavenly Ware led the team with 9 kills, Marayah Waller made a significant impact with 6 blocks, and Xeane Kamanu showed her defensive prowess with 12 digs.

Though the team faced adversity, Coach Montanez remains optimistic about the season ahead. “We started off really well. The first two games had lots of hits, tips, and serves that were on point,” she noted, emphasizing the team’s potential when they’re in sync. The PVHS girls’ volleyball team will look to build on these experiences, refine their skills, and improve their performance as the season progresses.
