The Pahrump Valley High School boys’ basketball team showcased determination and grit during their participation in the Mesquite Madness tournament from December 26 to 28, 2024. Despite facing tough competition, the Trojans delivered moments of brilliance that highlighted their growth and potential.

The tournament began on December 26 with a tight game against Virgin Valley JV. Pahrump battled hard in a back-and-forth contest, with Alejandro Lozano setting the tone early with a three-pointer, giving the Trojans a 3-2 lead. Joshua Slusher’s buzzer-beater tied the game 5-5 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter saw Lozano continuing to contribute, scoring on an inbound play to bring the Trojans within one point at 8-7. Aydon Veloz’s steal provided momentum, but Virgin Valley’s strong shooting pushed them ahead 14-10 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Jack Toth nailed a three-pointer to close the gap, followed by free throws from Slusher and Lozano, giving the Trojans their first lead since the opening quarter at 16-14. However, Virgin Valley responded with consistent three-point shooting to reclaim the lead. The fourth quarter remained close, with Lozano’s free throws briefly putting the Trojans ahead 19-17. Virgin Valley’s late-game scoring surge, including two critical three-pointers, secured their 28-23 victory.

Immediately following that game, the Trojans stepped in for a non-tournament game against White Pine, filling in for a missing team. This game gave Pahrump an opportunity to shine and build momentum. Despite trailing 29-24 at the end of the third quarter, the Trojans rallied in the fourth. Caden Briscoe’s three-pointer tied the game, followed by a layup that brought them even again at 29-29. Tramaine Burras electrified the crowd with a dunk that drew a foul, although he narrowly missed the free throw. Jack Toth sank a clutch three-pointer to give the Trojans a 36-34 lead. Lucas Gavenda added a key basket down low, and Burras sealed the game with another dunk and a successful free throw, leading Pahrump to a thrilling 41-36 victory.

On December 27, the Trojans faced Needles High School in a challenging matchup. Despite their best efforts, Pahrump struggled offensively, making just 11 of 49 field goal attempts in a 75-24 loss. Contributions came from Lozano and Gavenda in the first quarter, while Tramaine Burras and Antwahn Jackson added points in the second and third quarters. Cartier Jenkins and Jackson scored late baskets in the fourth quarter, but the Mustangs’ relentless defense proved too much.

The team’s second game of the day against Enterprise High School saw improved defense but continued shooting struggles. The Enterprise Wolves held Pahrump to 23 points in a 57-23 loss. Highlights included Caden Briscoe’s third-quarter three-pointer and contributions from Lozano and Jackson in the fourth. Lozano led the scoring with two baskets and a free throw in the final quarter. Despite the loss, the Trojans’ effort remained strong.
